3 NEW diagnosis codes in effect on April 1, 2022!

These are related to COVID vaccine status implemented by CDC and NCHS.

Vaccine status codes:

“These codes should not be assigned for individuals who are not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccines, as determined by a healthcare provider.”

Additional codes should be assigned to provide reasons for the underimmunization (Z28 series) such as contraindications; the patient’s decision based on belief/group pressure, other and unspecified reasons.

Underimmunization codes should not be assigned for those who are not eligible for the vaccine such as children who do not meet the required age to receive the vaccine.

  • Z28.310   Unvaccinated for COVID-19
  • Z28.311   Partially vaccinated for COVID-19 – Patient has not received full vaccination but has received at least 1 dose or a multi-dose regimen.
  • Z28.39     Other underimmunization status – This includes delinquent immunization status and lapsed immunization schedule status.

Don’t forget Post COVID-19 infection conditions:

  • U09.9   Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified

Assign this code when a patient has had COVID-19 in the past and has a post COVID-19 condition. Do not assign this code if the patient has active COVID-19.

Code first the condition that is related to COVID-19 infection, if known. This includes but is not limited to loss of smell, loss of taste, chronic respiratory failure, multisystem inflammatory syndrome.

Exception — This code can be assigned when a patient is re-infected with COVID-19 and has a condition related to their prior COVID-19 infection.
